When Tom & Terry first heard of the national D-Day 80th Anniversary event, they knew they would have to get the Barleycorn Inn involved. As major supporters of the UK's armed forces and veterans they, and a small team of volunteers, have been working tirelessly to create an inclusive three day event, involving international, national organisations and local community groups. The focus of this event is to collect the memories of local people about the Collingbournes in the lead up to D-Day, present these in an exhibition and to create an e-book to commemorate the event, available to everyone, downloadable from this website. Two hard copies will be printed: One will be buried in a time capsule under a new English Oak Tree in the village, the other we will dedicate to King Charles the Third.
There are so many stories, local tales of the privations and courage of villagers locally during WW2. Happy stories, sad stories, stories of courage. However, the voices telling these stories are slowly vanishing with time, lost forever like tears in the rain. A major part of the Barleycorn Inn D-D80 project will be to record, for posterity, the voices of local villagers today who were children here during WW2, ensuring that their history is remembered.
Tom, Terry & the team at the Barleycorn have set a target of raising £10,000 over the duration of the event, via sponsorship, donations and other fund raising activities. The funds raised will be divided equally between the five charities nominated by the D-Day 80 national event coordinators, shown above, and you can donate to this directly via the just giving pages on our here on our website if you like.
On the Thursday the 6th of June, The Barleycorn Inn will be following the National Programme for the D-Day 80th Anniversary.
Commencing with the D-Day 80 declaration and prayers, we will follow the national programme of events, and in addition, we shall be opening the D-Day & WW2 three-day exhibition at Collingbourne Kingston Village Hall giving a voice to local people and recording our history, whilst inviting local school children to experience what living during that time would have been like.
A Fish & Chip lunch will be served at the Barleycorn throughout the day, and in the evening we will host an evening of local stories with special guests.
The day will culminate in a lone piper, from the Wiltshire Caledonian Pipes & Drums, leading the village to lighting of the D-Day 80 Beacon at 9:15 pm on the hill behind The Barleycorn Inn.
On the Friday the 7th June, The Barleycorn Inn will be hosting the second day of a the three day live and static exhibition for the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
